Can you conduct an archeological dig into your own life? What is the influence of family myths? During the Argentine dictatorship, Mariano Pensotti’s father buried some incriminating objects in his own parents’ garden. Years later, long after he had given up looking for them (having forgotten where he had buried them), the new owners of the house unearthed the bag… Opening this “time capsule”, Mariano Pensotti discovers the young revolutionary that his father was in the 70’s, as well as meeting an interesting stranger – a duplicate of himself. This true story is the starting point of Pensotti’s new play, in which four characters’ lives intersect: a father; his son (“a former talented young theatre director”); a singer seeking recognition; and a young left-wing politician. In Cuando vuelva a casa voy a ser otro*, the stage becomes an archaeological museum displaying not artifacts or bones, but buried family legends. Mariano Pensotti even makes explicit references to the archaeological museum in Patagonia he visited as a child. The staging incorporates projections of texts that comment on the scenes, like artwork labels in a museum. The play is structured in chapters, with conveyor belts bringing actors on and off stage. Far from being nostalgic about their past, the characters “flee forward” in an attempt to build identities of their own.
