Cannes Palme d’Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul, one of the most magnetic and innovative figures in cinema today, ventures into the theatre for the first time with a “performance – projection” freely inspired by his latest film Cemetery of Splendour. The filmmaker’s favourite actress, Jenjira, embodies Jen, a housewife who is preparing to undergo surgery. At the hospital, her dreams mingle with those of Itt, a sleeping soldier from a country bereft of light. Elsewhere, a group of young people embark on an adventure down the Mekong River, while another group explores a cave as a possible habitat for an uncertain future… During their long dream-journeys, each person tends to their wounds and finds, in their slumber, a haven or a place of secret resistance. Fever Room unfolds in twilight, on the frontier of reality and dreams, between darkness and light. Filmed images merge on-stage with live performance, plunging the audience into a mental and sensorial experience as disorientating as it is hypnotising. Following the political undertones of his latest film, this theatrical production outlines the portrait of a country on the brink of collapse, in search of a future. This intense performance piece goes beyond the boundaries of cinema to immerse us in the film-maker’s dreamlike and sensual world, in which unseen forces can surface in the most banal reality. In the cavern of theatre, the magic takes hold, a fever comes over us, and once again, the shadows come to life.
